Mayowa Tomori “steals” back looted art
The term “colonization” is associated with the seizure of foreign territories and the subjugation, expulsion or murder of the local population over the past centuries. On the African continent, European nations in particular often plundered the local culture. Much of what they took with them has either disappeared to this day or can be found in private collections or museums. The artist Mayowa Tomori lived in Nigeria for 8 years before emigrating to the USA. The fact that people from Africa have to travel abroad to see the art of their homeland is unacceptable to him. That’s why he launched the “Loot Co.” project: Tomori photographs works of art in museums and uses them to create 3D models that are accessible to everyone.
Mit dem Begriff „Kolonialisierung“ verbindet man die Inbesitznahme auswärtiger Territorien und die Unterwerfung, Vertreibung oder Ermordung der ansässigen Bevölkerung in den vergangenen Jahrhunderten. Auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent haben besonders häufig europäische Nationen die dort ansässige Kultur geplündert. Vieles, was sie von mitgenommen haben, ist entweder bis heute verschwunden oder in Privatsammlungen oder Museen zu finden. Der Künstler Mayowa Tomori hat 8 Jahre in Nigeria gelebt, bevor er in die USA auswanderte. Dass Menschen aus Afrika ins Ausland reisen müssen, um die Kunst ihrer Heimat zu sehen, ist für ihn ein Unding. Deshalb hat er das Projekt „Loot Co.“ ins Leben gerufen: Tomori fotografiert dafür Kunstwerke in Museen und erstellt daraus 3D Modelle, die für alle zugänglich sind.
